Neck Treatments Worth Getting

neck treatments worth getting

If you’re like most people, your skincare routine stops at your jawline. The problem is your neck sees everything your face sees – sun exposure, movement, and time. If your neck has been an afterthought there’s a good chance you’ll start noticing signs of aging in that area first.

If you’ve been thinking more about the skin on your neck but are not sure where to start, this is a practical guide to what actually matters: why the neck ages the way it does, which neck treatments to get, and what you can do at home to support the work being done in-office.

Why Your Neck Ages Differently Than Your Face

The skin on your neck is not simply an extension of your face. It has its own characteristics that make it more vulnerable to visible aging.

Thinner Skin, More Movement

Neck skin tends to be considerably thinner with fewer oil glands than facial skin, which means less natural support and hydration over time. It is also in near-constant motion: turning, tilting, swallowing. That movement accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin and tends to create horizontal lines and crepiness earlier than most people anticipate. Collagen loss in this area often outpaces what happens on the face, which is part of why the neck can look noticeably older even when the skin above it has been well-maintained.

Years of Unprotected Sun Exposure

Most people are diligent about SPF on their face, but the neck is another story. Over years, the cumulative effect of unprotected UV exposure shows up as uneven texture, discoloration, and a contrast in skin quality between the face and neck that can be striking. The neck is often more sun-damaged than the face simply because it has been less protected.

Doom Scrolling Is Causing Your Neck to Age Faster

The downward tilt that comes with looking at phones and screens has become a recognized contributor to premature neck aging. Repeated folding of the skin in the same direction creates horizontal creases and providers are increasingly seeing this in younger patients who would not otherwise be thinking about neck-focused care. If you are noticing deeper lines in your neck, it’s not vanity, it’s your skin responding to hours of repeated folding. The good news is the skin on your neck will respond to the same treatments used for other signs of aging.

Skin Treatments for the Neck

Depending on the particular signs of aging you are noticing, there are a few other treatment options.

BBL / IPL Photofacial for Sun Damage

If discoloration, sun spots, or uneven pigmentation are the primary concern on your neck, you might be a candidate for BBL or IPL photofacials. After a consultation, your provider will recommend how many BBL/IPL photofacials will help you reach your goals (anywhere from 1-5). The result is a more even, clearer surface that better matches the skin above it.

RF Microneedling for Skin Laxity

When skin laxity or sagging along the neck is a primary concern, radiofrequency microneedling (RF microneedling) is an option to help increase collagen and elastin production while also helping to tighten skin. It tends to be a good option for clients who are starting to notice looseness along the lower face and neck and want to address it without a surgical approach.

Microneedling For Your Neck

Microneedling on the neck can be used to improve texture, reduce crepiness, and result in firmer-looking skin over a series of treatments. The thin skin of the neck actually makes it a strong candidate: the stimulation microneedling provides can make a meaningful difference in collagen density and overall surface quality.

Radiesse for Volume and Collagen Stimulation

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite filler, it can be injected directly into the neck to restore lost volume and improve the appearance of horizontal neck lines. It can function more like a biostimulator than a traditional filler, gradually improving skin quality, texture, and laxity in an area that tends to respond well to this kind of support. Results build progressively and can be combined with other neck treatments for a more comprehensive approach.

Laser Resurfacing for Aging Neck Skin

For more significant texture concerns, crepiness, or deeper lines on the neck, laser resurfacing can address surface-level changes that other treatments may not reach as directly. It works by removing a controlled layer of skin and prompting new, smoother skin to form in its place. Fall and winter are ideal timing for this treatment since reduced UV exposure during healing supports better results.

Skincare for Your Neck at Home

In-office treatments do the heavy lifting, but what you do at home between appointments supports and extends those results.

The Rule: If It Goes on Your Face, It Goes on Your Neck

The simplest shift you can make is applying your existing products down the neck and onto the chest rather than stopping at the chin. The skin on your neck benefits from the same active ingredients and hydration as the skin on your face. If you are already using effective products, don’t stop at your jawline.

If you don;t have products you love, we recommend starting with a good hyaluronic acid, moisturizer, and a retinol (used a few nights a week) to get started on your skincare journey.

SPF Every Day

Daily SPF on the neck is essential to prevent further damage. We like ColorScience, Revision SPF, and SkinBetter’s Sunbetter line as well. All of these formulas work well on the neck and chest and are light enough for daily wear. Keeping a dedicated SPF in your car can make the habit easier to maintain throughout the day. No treatment will hold its results well without consistent sun protection behind it.

When Is the Best Time to Start Neck Treatments?

Fall and winter tend to be the most practical time to start a neck treatment series, though you can have your neck treated year-round. The low UV exposure in colder months helps skin heal better between sessions, and more of the body is naturally covered during recovery. Starting a series in the fall means results are building steadily through the cooler months and showing well by the time spring arrives.

At your next visit, remember to ask about bringing your treatment down your neck. We are happy to talk through what makes sense for your skin and where to start at both our clinics in Nashville and Decatur, AL
